Abstract
The findings from the five subsidiary research questions were related to the study's overarching research question by applying the theoretical concept of gatekeeping to the college's presidential search process. The resulting gatekeeping model revealed four key elements of primary interest to the study: (a) access into the channel, (b) gatekeepers, (c) analysis and discussion of applicant materials to produce semi-finalists, and (d) interviews and discussion of merit of interviews to produce finalists. An analysis and discussion of these four elements revealed many factors that positively or negatively influenced a diverse candidate's ability to access and navigate the presidential selection process.
