Abstract
The process of dropping out of mainstream school (Chapter 6), their elusion of mainstream schooling through their own culture (Chapter 7), and their return to the school (Chapter 8) all confirm their marginal positions. I focused on politically deployed identities to examine how they ended up relegating themselves as the status of second-rate student. Central to my argument is the notion that second-chance schools play a crucial role in reinforcing dropouts' marginal status by letting returnees (1) individualize their dropping out (shown in their regret), (2) accept SGH's bottom tier position (indicated in their gratitude for SGH). Further, exploring multiple axes of domination, I analyzed political/ideological aspects of schooling in relation to current neo-liberal Korean society.
