Abstract
This study concerns the acculturation experiences of Asian American college students with respect to psychological distress. Variables of social support and alienation were identified to be additional variables of interest in fully understanding the relationship between acculturation and psychological distress. Acculturation was defined to be a two dimensional construct, composed of the Asian and American dimension, as operationalized by the Acculturation Scale for Asians. A strong relationship was indicated between social support, alienation, and psychological distress. The results indicate extremely high levels of psychological distress and its close relationship to social support and alienation. Asian and American dimensions of acculturation failed to demonstrate similar degrees of relationship to psychological distress.
