Abstract
Many students saw gangs existing as a consequence of the economics and social oppressions in the inner-city communities. Students recognized the power of gangs, noting that gang leadership would be more influential in improving the neighborhood than would civic officials and politicians. Students also indicated an ongoing need to communicate with teachers and school administrators. They saw the school as their best hope for achieving success. Student's acceptance of gangs is reality based: to do otherwise would jeopardize their own safety.
