Abstract
A Planning Support System (PSS) provides urban planners, policy makers, and citizens with the data, knowledge, and analytical tools needed for effective plan-making. As the development of PSSs gathers momentum, effective visualization interfaces are becoming increasingly important. Yet, a set of principles for putting together effective visualization interface has not been articulated in the literature. This dissertation attempts to derive these principles from studying the incremental evolution of an interface design, rather than a priori postulating and then verifying a set of principles. The interface evolved through various prototypical versions in response to changes in information to be visualized, as well as in response to changing ideas of how the interface is to be used, and to informal assessments from different users. Descriptions of the different versions recount the evolution of interface in response to various concerns, and the extent to which changes were successful or not. From these data, I extract some general principles about what makes visualization interfaces effective.
