Abstract
This thesis reports on the investigation of a dual-band planar inverted-F antenna (PIFA) for its use as a wearable antenna operating at 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. A 94x50 mm co-planar PIFA was simulated in Ansoft’s High Frequency Structural Simulator (HFSS) and its S parameters were measured. When satisfying results from the simulation were obtained, the antenna was fabricated using copper on an FR-4 substrate and a ferric chloride chemical bath. The S parameters were measured when in free space and when placed next to a bottle of tap water at room temperature. The antenna that was measured had smaller S11 values relative to the simulated values, indicating smaller reflection coefficient. These measurements helped in evaluating how near-body placement affects the radiation property of the antenna.
