Abstract
Abstract
This study of Isang Yun’s opera, Sim Tjong (1971-72) approaches the work from historical, cultural, and analytical perspectives and offers performance suggestions to those wishing to stage the opera. As a Korean exile living in post-World War II Germany, Yun mixes elements of traditional Korean culture and East Asian philosophy with the musical language of Western art music. Sim Tjong was derived from the pansori work, Simcheongga, which is a classic tale of filial piety and self-sacrifice. In order to stage a successful performance of this multicultural work, one must have an understanding of the historical origins of the tale of Sim Cheong, the East Asian philosophical systems that inform the plot (including Buddhism, Confucianism, and Taoism), and the musical system through which pansori performers create their performances. My historical and cultural examination of the Sim Cheong tale and the pansori tradition will help future performers craft thoughtful performances that remain true to the traditional Korean elements that Yun carefully included.
