Abstract: Rapid technological developments in the higher-education sector have resulted in a greater reliance on end-user searching. It is important that those conducting literature searches for research purposes are making the most effective use of the databases. In order to measure searching behavior, a number of methods can be employed, and these can be quantitative or qualitative in nature. All techniques have merit, but the researcher must understand the theories about knowledge upon which the various methodologies rest, and must take care to choose those techniques that are most suited to the investigation.
