Abstract
The aim of this project is to explore the origins, ambitions, successes and failures of partnerships between American and African universities. The mid-twentieth century was a time of great optimism and hope in Africa; it was also a time when Cold War tensions politicized aid and development on the continent. Studying the engagement of US universities with African institutions of higher learning promises to offer a new perspective on an era of rapid political and social transformation.
