Abstract

Gun violence is one of the biggest public health issues of our time. Although there has been more focus on the link between gun violence and mental illness in the media, it should not be the sole focus in addressing the issue because it is not the only reason gun violence occurs and does not explain why it happens in general. Rather, there should be focus on gun violence in itself in order to take action to reduce and even prevent it. Gun violence is most prevalent in socioeconomically disadvantaged communities, where such behavior is considered the norm and leads to more respect for the residents. Currently there are state and local gun laws to control gun violence, but there should be more national restrictions on the use of guns. By implementing this legislation, it can help reduce gun violence even more than what is seen today.
