Abstract
Distal radius fractures, such as the Colles fracture, are common injuries sustained within all age groups. Failure to properly realign a fracture a practice known as reduction - can lead to decreased joint motion, grip strength, increased stiffness and pain. Unfortunately, medical practitioner training of fracture reductions is limited with minimal understanding of the related mechanics. Our aim is to develop a methodology for evaluating the sensitivity of wrist ligament strain to fracture reduction tolerances. A simplified anatomical model of the bones in the wrist joint will serve as the foundation for the experiments. The contribution of ligaments to passive resistance will be modeled using six elastic bands spanning the wrist. Optical markers will be affixed at five points along each band, and motion capture data will be collected of the marker positions during wrist flexion and extension. Measurements using a non-fractured radius will be collected, after which a Colles fracture will be introduced and subsequently reduced. The effect of the reduction tolerances will be evaluated by measuring the ligament strain while changing three radiological parameters: volar tilt, radial inclination, and radial height. These parameters will be carefully adjusted using a three dimensional fixation device developed in house. Identifying the sensitivity of wrist movement to reduction parameters will allow for the development of a simulation tool that will aid in the instruction of wrist fracture reduction for healthcare professionals, ultimately leading to improved patient outcomes.
