In this essay I examine currently accepted methods of tutoring ESL writers and examine them in comparison with what ESL writers believe to be the most helpful tutoring methods. I address reading aloud, directive versus non-directive tutoring, the dominant speaker, the
use of grammar terminology, idiomatic language in individual appointments, as well as the impact of these issues in group sessions with ESL writers.
