Abstract
This dissertation fills two gaps in literary history. First, no edition has ever presented reliable texts for the nineteen sketches collected in Augustus Baldwin Longstreet's seminal work of early American humor and realism, Georgia Scenes, Characters, Incidents, &c. in the First Half Century of the Republic (1835). Longstreet did not read page proofs for the error-filled first edition, and subsequent editions have added further corruptions. Second, as Longstreet never carried out his intention of publishing an expanded edition of Georgia Scenes, the twenty-seven surviving Georgia Scenes (including the nineteen collected in the original Georgia Scenes) have never been collected together. This dissertation provides authoritative texts for all twenty-seven sketches. Also included are a biography of Longstreet; a critical history and overview of the Georgia Scenes; and a textual apparatus cataloging significant variants in the publications of the Georgia Scenes.
