Abstract
In this thesis we calculate the Drell-Yan cross-section for the production of massive muon pairs at moderate values of q(,(PERP))('2). We do this in several theories, including the important case of Quantum Chromodynamics. By looking at another field theory which is simpler than QCD, we give physical insight into the meaning of scale-breaking and into the problem of what sets the scale of the quark distributions in parton model applications. We show that there are two sources of scale-breaking, one controlled by the mass of the photon, one by the kinematics of the particular process. Our final results indicate the presence of a contribution due to the exponentiation of single logarithms in the Drell-Yan cross-section that has not been reported before.
