Abstract

FSL is a powerful, open-source analysis tool used for the analysis of neuroimaging data. It can be used for registering, warping, overlaying, and visualizing images with ease across several subjects. In speech imaging with MRI, thousands of images are collected of anatomy of a particular subject. These images can be difficult to interpret due to differences in individual subjects anatomy. Through the use of FSL and an Atlas developed by collaborators at University of Maryland, we applied imaging techniques such as FLIRT and FNIRT on the MRI images from speech scans. We used shell scripts to develop registration and warping methods so that we would be able to overlay structures from an atlas onto anatomy from an individual. We applied these algorithms to multiple structural images. Through the results we were able to come to the conclusion that the atlas is accurate to a certain extent. In the image I have shared, you can see the parts, such as the tongue, have been colored in. This is done one a 3D level and allows for better analysis of images. Once this technology has been completed, it will be one of the most helpful things for researchers and members of the medical field. I am very passionate about this and will continue to work on it with time to come.
