- Abstract
- This photo was taken in Varanasi, India during an evening puja performance along the ghats. In the photo is a tourist observing the performance from one of many boats. She sits cross-legged, rapt by the performance, attempting to understand the fire, smoke, chanting, and ritual behaviors. Without prior knowledge, how does one engage with a cultural landscape and learn to understand an experience? The research focuses upon the human and landscape interaction, and the ways in which pilgrims and tourists are able to access information about histories or mythologies in a site like Varanasi, which is a palimpsest of information. Furthermore, the research attempts to understand the unique interaction between peoples, mythologies, and histories in spaces, which are both highly spiritual and possess an almost timeless quality. Does the woman on the boat understand everything she observes? And, how are those experiences embodied?
