Abstract

This longhorned beetle (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) is known as the Red Headed Ash Borer (or Neoclytus acuminatus). The larvae (or the immature versions of the shown adult) of this beetle spend their entire immature development in the confines of the rotting log of their mothers choosing. Better be a good one! I was curious, how much does it matter what type of log they're stuck in? I took a peek into this species communication system their contact pheromones. This is part of the waxy outer layer of their exoskeleton that they've coopted for communication, specifically for mate recognition. There is an incredible amount of information in this waxy coating, acting sort of as a Hi, my name is sticker for the insect world. This information can change depending on where the beetles live, the time of year, and even how big they are. Id still like to know if there are tree-snob beetles out there, that will only mate with beetles from high-value or similar host trees, but this is research for another day.
