Abstract

My thesis entitled The Ballad Collection is a choreographic investigation of the multiplicity and complexity of ways a black dancing body can be seen and represented. The power of art, including dance, is that it forms cultural images and references and therefore has the power to shape new and liberating images of blackness. This can, in turn, have an effect on one's perception of black bodies. In my choreography, I strive to present inclusive possibilities of how a black body can be seen, ranging from the vulnerable to the empowering. This photo represents the multiplicity of images that I bring to my dances. In this image there is softness, rigidity, darkness, and lightness that represents the multiple aspects of my choreography and my being. Seeing this image as an aggregate of a whole allows for audiences to absorb the complexity of my black dancing body. In this complexity there is nuanced and complicated beauty that would be lost if reduced to a singularity. Inspired by the scholarly writings of Robin DG Kelley, Mark Anthony Neal, and the science-fiction of Octavia Butler, My choreographic research presents black bodies in new and imaginative landscapes calling on the past and the future.
