Abstract

I spent the Fall 2014 semester in Austria researching the policies and decision making processes involved in wind farm development within the federal state of Burgenland. For this capstone project, I gave special attention to stakeholder involvement and the spatial parameters of development. Over the course of the semester, I interviewed environmental non-governmental organizations, wind farm developers, federal offices, the national transmission grid operator, the wind energy association, and other research groups. In addition to these interviews, I am utilizing spatial analysis to reflect the required distances from wind turbines to various environmental, social, and economic parameters. I captured this photo from a train through Burgenland, and it nicely demonstrates the spatial complexities involved in siting wind farms and balancing sustainability needs. As demonstrated within the photo, there are special protective distances maintained between the wind turbines and residential areas, roadways, nature preserves and environmentally sensitive areas, agriculture, and electrical transmission lines. Through the perception and proximity of wind farm development, this image reflects the competing objectives of environmental, social, and economic sustainability, and further supports the knowledge gained from stakeholder interviews and spatial analysis.
