- Without even knowing it, each and every one of us come into contact with upwards of 20 electric machines daily. In fact, nearly 2/3 of all energy consumed in the world is done so by electric machines. These amazing and diverse devices are found in our computers, vehicles, and even homes, and can reach efficiencies upwards of 98%. When mechanical energy is converted to electrical energy (think power plants), the machine is called a generator. When electrical energy is converted to mechanical energy (think electric vehicles), the machine is called a motor. My research aims to leverage the ever-decreasing cost and size of electronics in the development of future electric machines. The image shows the four stages of machine analysis, each providing the engineer with different insights into the design and operation of the device. The upper two quadrants depict model development, or simulation inputs. The lower two quadrants are the simulation outputs, and show the formation of magnetic flux density. All eyes are on magnetic flux density, as its magnitude, direction, and distribution is critical for proper machine performance.
