Abstract

Originated from graphics and symbols, Chinese calligraphy has been one of the most important components of Chinese culture since the earliest day of history. Over thousands of years, Chinese calligraphy has been developed not only as a communication tool in Chinese peoples daily lives, but also an art that has been inherited by generations. Generations of Chinese people practice, appreciate, and value Chinese calligraphy with pride and respect. As an important channel of demonstrating traditional culture and art, Chinese calligraphy was listed as intangible cultural heritage in 2009 by the UNESCO. A considerable amount of calligraphic works have been accumulated through Chinas long history, including paintings, tablets, plaques, steles, and alike. Nowadays, many of them appear as attractions in tourism sites and destinations. Some calligraphic works are collectively aggregated on a landform, and their contents reflect specific cultural overlays of human activities, thus forming the calligraphic landscape in China. Using the example of a well-known touristic attraction with Chinese calligraphic landscape in Xian, China, my research examines Chinese tourists perceived value of calligraphic landscape in the tourism context. This picture shows the calligraphic inscriptions on cliff surfaces of Mount. Hua, in Xian. It draws numerous tourists to visit every year.
