Abstract: GOLDHOR’S CHALLENGE TO LIBRARIANSHIP to find invariant, universal relationships among library variables is discussed. Scientific problem solving is seen within the context of Kuhnian science, and research in librarianship is considered as not having the characteristics of Kuhnian science. The work of librarianship is analyzed as primarily a discussion of values, or post hoc rationalization of events. It is concluded that library problem solving will not succeed until fundamental problems are addressed.
