- Abstract
- The neural network has been one of the most complex biological systems studied by scientists. Due to the slow development of structure-specific and high-resolution imaging, decades of research have not answered questions about the functionality of various neural components. Based on a process called high-harmonic generation (HHG), we were able to distinguish how different components of a neural network respond to light of a single input frequency. The image was obtained by focusing a pulsed laser beam on cultured cortical rat neuron. Here, green represents light at twice the input frequency, which is emitted by neural structures such as dendrites and axons. These structures are responsible for the transport of electrical signals across neurons. Additionally, violet represents the light at triple the input frequency, a typical response from structures at the interface between layers of neuron cells. Using optical techniques, my PhD research focuses on studying how these structures change in direction, size and location under physical stimulation. Additionally, I am exploring methods of analyzing these results quantitatively which would be extremely useful for determining the change in the neural system at the onset of any disease or degeneration.
