- Abstract
- Carbon-fiber composites are quickly becoming more prevalent as key structural components in a multitude of applications, from cars, planes and wind turbine blades to sporting equipment. As we further utilize this material in our daily lives it imperative to understand the effect traditional machining procedures have on its structural integrity. The image shown here was taken with a scanning electron microscope at 5000x magnification, and demonstrates the devastating effects traditional machining procedures has on the microstructure of carbon-fiber composites. The damage displayed in this image further motivates research into advanced machining techniques specific to carbon-fiber composites which may maintain structural integrity in critical applications where high cost and even lives may be at risk.
