- Abstract
- The ability to move around is crucial for all organisms to survive and sustain. Locomotion is the complex sequence of movements of different body parts in response to the brain signals. Our research intends to study these complex postures in living organisms, specifically the Zebrafish. Our research, thus far shows that swimming of a zebrafish can be visualized as a combination of three unique postures. This image shows visualization of the fish swimming in a 3D space where axes represent the three unique postures. Each point in this colored 3D pattern indicates the contribution from these three unique postures for an instantaneous fish swimming posture. Interestingly, this pattern also captures all the stereotypical behaviors of a free swimming fish. For example when a fish swims forward, the left and right undulations of the fish postures are captured by spirals and when it turns, the pattern expands on the left side. The image here shows the closest possible unique fish postures which give us a better understanding of the movements.
