Abstract
This thesis focuses on Marc-André Dalbavie’s Flute Concerto (2006) and two of
his chamber pieces with flute: In Advance of the Broken Time…(1994) and Palimpseste
(2002). The background of the composer and the Flute Concerto are explored and the
composer’s characteristic compositional techniques seen throughout the three works,
such as resonance and spatialization, are discussed. Common compositional techniques
between the Flute Concerto and his two chamber pieces are discussed as well as the
differences among the three pieces. Recommended performance practice for flute players
in all three pieces is also included.
