- Abstract
- My research investigates the systems and global networks upon which contemporary agricultural economies depend. The work I am submitting for your consideration comes from my book titled, Pollinate/Pollute, which was created in early 2014. The books paper is handmade from soy and corn fibersthe slightly more yellow pages come from soy; the cooler color pages, from corn. I harvested both materials from the Sustainable Student Farm at the University of Illinois, as well as a neighboring farm in Champaign. The fibers were processed into paper at Fresh Press on the University of Illinois campus. The pages source material is important to me because this reflects the actual crop rotation used by farmers in Illinois to improve soil fertility and structure (in fact the practice of crop rotation was partly developed here in the Morrow Plot experiment). Printed on the corn paper is my drawing of distressed corncobs on the run. These forms are meant to be funny, but also express bewilderment at our current agricultural system that relies too heavily on chemical fertilizers, encourages monoculture, and often displays disregard for long-term sustainability.
