- Abstract
- Financial barriers are becoming a reality for more families as the cost of tuition continues to rise and speculations of the role of financial aid in providing or hindering access are becoming more prevalent. While post-secondary institutions are looking to diversify the student body in ways that more accurately reflect the country's changing demographics, financial matters still restrict access for underrepresented student populations. The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign boasts no exception, with one of the highest tuition rates of any public institution in the U.S., and recent downward shifts in African American student enrollment. I wanted my image to depict the ways access is physically represented in the very structures and buildings of our campus. The differing bars, gates, and locks and paths serving as a metaphor all too familiar for many underrepresented students seeking opportunities to a brighter future.
