Abstract
Computer-assisted algorithmic music composition has achieved great success in the past few decades. Composing this kind of music makes the composers think about music in a new way. Research on applying artificial intelligence (AI) methods in music generation emerged almost as early as the beginning of AI. What makes Music AI unique is that it “has involved a degree of complexity which is not the complexity of mathematical formulae, nor the complexity of large quantities of data, but rather a kind of complexity of ideas.”
This project tries to partially answer the question whether it is possible to write a computer program which composes music like a human. Genetic algorithms (GA), one type of artificial intelligence, is the main tool used as the music generation engine in this project. The background of artificial intelligence and genetic algorithms is discussed in the first several chapters, including a brief historical review and related works, followed by the code implementation of Departure-core, the GA of this project.
