Abstract
This thesis discusses four string pieces by the Korean-German composer Isang Yun that are not widely performed due to their technical and musical difficulties. Gasa and Duo were written utilizing twelve-tone techniques, whereas Contemplation and Kontrast were written utilizing Yun’s own main-tone technique. Each piece is different in regards to form, pitch material, motivic development, and technical and interpretive performance issues. I also examine the influence of philosophical and religious traditions such as Taoism and Buddhism on the music and the connection between traditional Korean music and Yun’s compositions.
