Abstract
Giovanni Nasco, although today considered to be a minor composer of the sixteenth century, was in his own time respected as a highly skilled musician. He held positions in Vicenza, in Verona, as director of the Accademia Filharmonia, and in Treviso, as the maestro di capella of the cathedral.
"Nasco was primarily known as a composer of secular music, and his sacred works were published only after his death. The Lamentationi a voce pari, published in 1561, stands as one of the most comprehensive Holy Week collections of the sixteenth century. Nasco's compositional style found in the pieces in this collection are based on common practice of liturgical music of the day, to which he added elements deriving from secular music. Many aspects of his style in the collection, however, looks toward the generation of composers following him, and acts as a link between the ""new style"" of secular composition in northern Italy in the middle of the sixteenth century and the vertically conceived music of the late Renaissance and early Baroque. A complete transcription of the collection is included."
