Abstract
CAST (Computer Assisted Sequential Transcription) is a MIDI-compatible program which realizes in music a stream of elements (for example, alphanumeric characters). It does so according to user-defined musical parameter assignments made to the elements in the stream. In other words, it translates text into music, according to the user's definitions. Each character of a text may be used to define one or more musical parameters, such as pitch, duration, voice change, or amplitude.
This program is interfaced with Adagio from the CMU MIDI Toolkit by Roger B. Dannenberg. It assumes a working knowledge of DOS or Unix environments, including text editors such as vi, line entry, WordPerfect (text files), etc.
