Abstract
The purpose of this dissertation was to provide performers with an accurate and complete reference of the compositions for the trio of flute, oboe and clarinet. Due to the lack of knowledge of available scores, this ensemble has been neglected in performance halls. The trio for flute, oboe, and clarinet serves as a variance to the standard woodwind quintet program, or as an ensemble work for solo recitals. In addition, there are compositions available for performance by young students through professionals.
Forty-six compositions written specifically for flute, oboe and clarinet are included in this annotated bibliography. Works that have been arranged for woodwind trio are listed in an Appendix located at the end of the document. In addition only works that are available for public purchase in the form of scores and/or individual parts are included in the annotations.
Annotations of the works are presented in two sections: factual information and analytical information. Factual information includes: composer's name, place and date of birth and death, occupation, dedication or commission, title of the composition, location and name of publisher, date of composition or publication, movement titles and/or tempo indications, duration in minutes, form of distribution (score and parts, parts alone, score alone), range for each instrument, and level of difficulty. After these listings, the first bars of the score, or individual parts are included. Analytical information includes performance considerations, and descriptions of musical parameters: texture, rhythm and meter, pitch organization, and form. In addition, the author's opinion regarding the works suitability for performance or study is provided.
The analyses of the works is intended to be performance rather than theoretically oriented. Comments for each of the three instruments is provided, but more concentration is given to the flute since it is the writers area of expertise. The writer consulted extensively with accomplished oboe and clarinet performers so that the comments directed to these instruments are sound.
