Abstract
A survey instrument was constructed in order to test the feasibility of using the Pepper National Music Network for survey research. The content of the survey was designed to determine: (a) the situations and makeup of the group, (b) what, if any, impact was evident in their programs of certain factors identified by music educators in a survey conducted by the National Arts Education Research Center at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (Leonhard, 1991), and (c) what attitude did the respondents express toward a Computer-Mediated Communication (CMC) delivered survey?
The survey was online for a period of two weeks. Responses were received from 268 CMC users and of those, 204 were used in the analysis. The data were collected by the CMC system mainframe computer and forwarded to the investigator on a microcomputer diskette. Results were calculated by percentage of response and compared to the NAERC survey. A summary of the results was posted on the CMC system. In addition, the investigator sought feedback from non-respondents as to their reasons for not taking the survey.
The quality of the data compared favorably to that of the NAERC study, but the efficiency with which the investigator was able to retrieve the data represents marked improvement over previous methods of survey research. In addition, the respondents were overwhelmingly in favor of future surveys delivered via CMC.
