Abstract
Measurement has been made of the organic sulfur concentration in coal macerals of several bituminous coals. Variation of organic sulfur content among the maceral groups is striking. The average organic sulfur content of the major maceral groups has the progression S(exinite) > S(vitrinite) > S(inertinite). The highest concentration of organic sulfur occurs for those macerals with a density around 1.18 gm/cc. This density corresponds to that of sporinite in bituminous coals. Desulfurization study of these coals shows that the removal of organic sulfur increases with increasing temperature. The percentage of organic sulfur removal has nearly the same values regardless of the maceral types. Our measurements were also carried out for pyrite decomposed within a coal matrix. A reaction between pyritic sulfur and the hydrocarbon matrix was detected around 450(DEGREES)C.
