Abstract
The major purpose of this study was to identify continuing professional needs and expectations of health educators. Data were collected using a mail questionnaire sent to a sample group composed of randomly selected members of the Association for the Advancement of Health Education, American Public Health Association, Public Health Education section and the Society for Public Health Education.
Results showed that health educators responding (502) in all three professional associations perceived immediate needs with broad based applicability in diverse occupational settings. The content areas of program planning and evaluation were indicated as priority areas. Needs identified to meet long range career goals tended to be closely linked to occupational setting and educational background.
The reasons for participation in continuing education identified were of six major types, namely: Professional Improvement, Professional Interaction, Professional Reflection, Professional Service, Professional Role Clarification and Personal Benefits.
