Abstract
  • This thesis examines the ties between two opposite, yet complementary movements--splitting and integration of the self--and two major themes in Julien Green's fictional and autobiographical works: the dream and the double.
  • The first chapter focuses on the two ways through which Green's characters, very much like their author, try to escape from reality: through "reverie" and hallucinations. Green, himself, is inspired by the dream and by visions in his creative work.
  • The second chapter discusses the use of the dream theme in Green's novels, his own views with regard to the psychoanalytical theories, as well as the ties between dream and creativity.
  • In the third chapter, we are concerned with the ways in which Green experienced self-division in his own life and gave expression to it in his writing. Several aspects of this theme of fragmentation have been studied: the "multiple personality," the "mirror" image, the double as an expression of the fear of death, the spiritual duality and the functions of multiplicity.
