Abstract
A collection of information concerning Hamilton Forrest's 1930's opera, Camille, a French version of the Alexandre Dumas, fils novel, La Dame au Camelias. The updating of the story to 1930 and the addition of jazz elements is studied, as well as the successes and failures of the piece regarding its placement in the history of opera, the Chicago Opera Theater, and Mary Garden, for whom the work was written.
Personal experience with the work is documented through the preparation and performance of Act II, scenes 1 and 3. Difficulties with the rhythmic aspects of the score as well as notation discrepancies are handled.
The opera is found to be in need of much interpretation of the technical aspects, i.e. notes, rhythms, text. While successful on a basic level, Camille is not considered to have a permanent place in the operatic repertoire.
