Abstract
The purpose of this study was to categorize the content of the feature articles, articles of interest, and research critiques published in volumes 1-85 of the Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education from 1963 through 1985 with regard to topics investigated and methods of research employed (N = 964).
If the article or critique involved more than one topic or method of research, it received multiple categorization. No limit was set regarding the number of topics or methods of research under which an article or critique might be categorized. Assignment of topics and methods of research involved 28 topic categories and nine research method categories. Data were collected and reported in frequencies and percentages of occurrences (both articles and pages) for feature articles, articles of interest, and research critiques concerned with each topic and method of research.
In order to determine the extent to which trends could be identified concerning the use of the categories of topic and method of research, the 23 year period of the study was divided into four periods: (I) 1963-1969; (II) 1970-1975; (III) 1976-1980; and (IV) 1981-1985, based upon the date of publication in the Bulletin. The number of titles appearing under these categories for each of these time periods provided the basis for determining trends in the frequency of use. Results of this trend analysis were reported in frequencies and percentages of occurrence for each category within each time period.
Trends were identified and conclusions indicated preference for the following topics: Psychology of Music Education, Evaluation in Music Education, Program Development, and Instrumental Music. Trends and conclusions also revealed increasing use of the following methods of research: descriptive, experimental, and survey.
