Abstract
The Concerti di Andrea et di Giovanni Gabrieli, Contenti musica di chiesa, madrigali, & altro, per voci & stromenti musicali: a 6, 7, 8, 10, 12 & 16 is a collection of 44 motets and 23 madrigals composed by Andrea and Giovanni Gabrieli. The Concerti, compiled and edited by Giovanni, were published in Venice by Gardano in 1587, one year after Andrea's death. The collection, representing diverse styles, is particularly interesting for its large and varied number of voices. Polychoral motets exist side by side with mass movements and madrigals as well as one instrumental ricercar a 8.
For this thesis, focus is on eleven of the nineteen madrigals composed by Andrea. These pieces, representative of the styles employed throughout the publication, have been heretofore untranscribed and unavailable in a performing edition. The analysis is divided into two main sections: (1) a discussion of the nature and forms of the texts, and (2) general musical traits. The latter section is concerned with the rhythmic and melodic aspects of text underlay, the amplification of words and concepts through musical means, range and tessitura, tonal types, and a discussion of the mensuration signs C and C as used in the Concerti. The appendix includes the transcriptions of the selected madrigals and translations of the text.
