Abstract
This dissertation investigates the recent performance of the National System of Rural Credit in Brazil.
In Chapter II, the impact of economic doctrines--during the Post-War period--on agriculture is assessed. Special emphasis is given to the transferences of income from agriculture to industry, followed by the adoption of subsidized rural credit.
In Chapter III, it is discussed the causal relationship between income and credit concentration. It is studied the mechanisms of credit concentration and banks' behavior in this process.
In Chapter IV, it is examined the contention that subsidized rural credit undermines the effectiveness of monetary policy in Brazil.
Finally, in Chapter V, it is analyzed the effects that policies alternative to subsidized credit have on production.
