Abstract
The antiviral and antimicrobial compounds sceptrin, oxysceptrin, bromosceptrin, debromosceptrin, dibromosceptrin and debromooxysceptrin have been isolated from the sponge Agelas mauritiana and their structures have been determined by spectroscopic means. Syntheses of model compounds for some of the structures assigned were also carried out.
An investigation of biologically active compounds from Dictyopteris undulata has led to the isolation of zonarol, chromazonarol, zonaroic acid and isozonaroic acid and structure determination by chemical transformation and spectroscopic means. All of these compounds exhibited antimicrobial activity and some also showed activity against LI210 cells and antiviral activity.
A study of Pseudoceratina crassa has yielded (+)-aeroplysinin-1 as the bioactive principle. This compound exhibited antimicrobial activity and activity against LI210 and P388 leukemia cells.
