Abstract
I. The synthesis and solid state structure of {10-P-3} 5-Aza-2,8-dioxa-3,7-di-tert-butyl-1-phosphabicyclo{3.3.0}octa-3,6-diene (ADPO) is described. The compound exhibits a T-shaped molecular geometry about the phosphorus center and represents the first example of a tri-coordinate hypervalent phosphorus (10-P-3). The analogous 10-As-3 compound has also been synthesized and exhibits a T-shaped molecular geometry about the arsenic center.
II. The intramolecular reaction of trivalent arsines with ketones and aldehydes has been investigated. If trifluoroacetylphenols are used, 8-As-3 bicyclic arsines are obtained. The solid state structure of these compounds has been determined.
