Abstract
A decision support system consists of a formalized computer decision model integrated with a structured database for the purpose of providing information for management decision making. Inherent in the decision making process within this environment is the understanding that the model, its database content, and the resulting processed information are error-free and a correct representation of the system state. Typically managers readily assimilate results into the decision making process with minimal regard being given to the quality condition of the data being used.
In actuality the activities associated with the capture, coding, entry, and verification of data generate errors. When these errors escape detection, they become a part of the decision support system and affect the results of the management decision making process.
Establishment of procedures to control data processing activities and the resulting quality of the database content used to support decision making is generally encumbered by the complex interrelationships existing within the structure of such systems. This effort introduces the concept of an Integrated Quality System (IQS) as a means for controlling the quality of information processed within a computer integrated manufacturing (CIM) system. A generalized methodology has been developed for planning and controlling the quality of both the information generation process and the resulting product of these processes. This methodology is based on modeling the data transformation operations and applying the phases of a sequential, closed-loop control process, called a "quality control (QC)window", to perform all of the functions of a control cycle.
The specific application involves control of the content of recorded on-hand inventory levels. A reduction in the discrepancies between recorded on-hand and physical on-hand inventory levels is sought as improved cycle counting procedures are developed.
