Abstract
The feeding value of co-products from the corn wet-milling industry, i.e., corn gluten feed (CGF) and corn germ meal (CGM), for gestating sows and starter (S), grower (G) and finisher (F) pigs was determined. Effects on growth and carcass composition of pigs fed diets containing various amounts of CGF and CGM were evaluated. The amino acid and fiber digestibilities of corn co-products were quantified using pigs fitted with ileal cannulas. The use of the cecectomized rooster as a model to predict pig digestibility values was evaluated. The feeding of diets containing 50% CGM depressed (P $$.05) from pigs fed corn-soybean meal (SBM)-based diets. Finisher pigs fed a lysine-supplemented, 40% CGF diet with.02% added tryptophan (trp) demonstrated increased (P $$.05) by feeding up to 30% CGF in isocaloric diets; however, feeding 30% CGF in non-isocaloric diets reduced G/F (P $$.05) of G pigs compared to pigs fed a pelleted, trp-adequate diet. Single parity reproductive performance of gestating gilts and sows fed a trp-supplemented corn-CGF diet was not different (P $>$.05) from the performance of those fed a corn-SBM diet. Ileal lysine and trp digestibilities were not different (P $>$.05) among CGF, CGM, corn and SBM. Pelleting CGF and the addition of corn fiber to CGF improved (P $<$.05) ileal lysine digestibility values. Neutral detergent fiber digestibility was highest (P $<$.05) for SBM in comparison to CGF, CGM and corn. The addition of corn fiber to CGF improved (P $<$.05) acid detergent fiber digestibility. The cecectomized rooster was found to be of limited value as a model to predict digestibility values in the pig for feedstuffs used in this thesis.
