Abstract
The columnar geocomposite is an innovative concept in subsurface drainage. An investigation has been conducted to study the structural properties of the columnar geocomposite under uniform pressures. The research included both analytical and experimental analyses.
The stress-strain characteristics of the polymeric materials incorporated in the geocomposite were investigated. New testing techniques were developed to determine the Poisson's ratios of the polymeric materials.
A finite element model was introduced to analyze the nonlinear structural behavior of the geocomposite. The degenerated Lagrangian shell element was used in the modeling. The model was validated with a series of small-scale tests in the laboratory.
The effects of the fabric stiffness and the column size on the deformation of the fabric were evaluated using the structural analysis model. An optimization procedure for the core configuration was demonstrated by combining the structural analysis model and an optimization program.
