Abstract
Methods for determining parameter values of network equilibrium models are investigated. These methods are necessary for the implementation of such models in planning practice.
Two problems are examined in detail. The first concerns the estimation of generalized cost function coefficients from survey data under the hypothesis that the travel choices correspond to the assumptions of the network equilibrium model. A maximum likelihood approach to this problem is evaluated analytically and computationally for a large network. The second problem concerns the estimation of the dispersion measure defined by the entropy function for sampled-based trip tables. Such measures are biased downward by the presence of sampling zeros in the trip table. A method for adjusting such tables was evaluated for the Chicago data. Results for both problems are presented. Suggestions for future research and model implementation conclude the dissertation.
