Abstract
A method has been developed for evaluating the probability of failure of braced excavations through three critical modes of failure, namely buckling of struts, heaving of the base, and excessive settlement of the adjoining ground. The method was applied to braced excavations in medium to soft clays (mainly in Japan), and a range of reliability in current practice was examined. The strut-buckling mode of current design appears to have reliability comparable to permanent structures, whereas two orders of magnitude lower reliability had been observed for the heaving mode.
Based on the evaluation of reliability of current practice, reliability-based design safety factors have been proposed for the strut-buckling and heaving modes.
The significance of human errors in structural reliability analysis was examined. Based on a survey on human errors, the effect of such errors on the failure probability of braced excavations was evaluated. The failure probability including the effect of human errors appears to be twice the probability calculated in the absence of human errors.
