Abstract
A discrete optimization approach is presented for the design of reinforced concrete structures. The design variables are the overall depth, effective depth and width of members, and area of longitudinal reinforcement. In addition, the details such as the amount of web reinforcement and cutoff points of longitudinal reinforcement are also considered as variables. Total cost has been used as the objective function, and has been optimized taking into account the constraints developed according to the ACI Building Code (318-77) requirements. The objective function is the cost of the structure which is based on the costs per unit volume of the steel and the concrete. The constraints include the requirements such as flexural strength, shear strength, ductility, serviceability, concrete cover, spacing, web reinforcement, development length and cutoff points of longitudinal reinforcement. Design examples include simply supported beams, continuous beams and small frames. From a practical standpoint the method developed can be a valuable tool for design of reinforced concrete structures.
