Abstract
The nature of borderline disturbance is currently one of the most controversial topics in clinical research. In the last decade, research has focused on clarifying the definition of this disorder, and alternative diagnostic systems have been proposed. The present study investigated the similarities and differences among borderline prototypes represented by three different sets of diagnostic criteria and compared these theoretically defined prototypes with prototypes derived through statistical techniques in a psychometrically defined non-patient sample. Results indicated that self-report measures can successfully detect borderline disturbances in such a sample. Furthermore, diagnostic prototypes can be described by a few prototypal features which differ depending on the particular diagnostic system. Finally, empirically derived borderline prototypes differ from those represented by formal diagnostic criteria. These results have implications for the relative diagnostic importance of specific criteria included in present diagnostic systems.
